A standardised admission test designed to assess reasoning and reading skills relevant to law school.
The Law School Admission Test is developed by the Law School Admission Council (LSAC). It is used by law schools, particularly in the United States and Canada, as part of their admission process.
The LSAT may be relevant to applicants considering law school programmes that accept LSAT scores, including many U.S. law schools.
LSAC administers the test, but each law school determines its own academic and application requirements.
The current multiple-choice test has four sections. The writing assessment is completed separately.
| Component | Format | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Logical Reasoning 1 | 35 minutes | One scored section assessing argument analysis. |
| Logical Reasoning 2 | 35 minutes | One additional scored section assessing logical reasoning. |
| Reading Comprehension | 35 minutes | One scored section assessing understanding and analysis of complex passages. |
| Variable section | 35 minutes | An unscored section used to evaluate questions for future tests. |
| Argumentative Writing | Separate assessment | A written argument completed separately from the multiple-choice test. |
The LSAT focuses on reasoning and reading skills rather than memorising a conventional subject-based law syllabus.
